Learn the art and magic of printing & painting with only iron and tannin!
WHEN- TBA WINTER 2027
In this hands-on workshop, we will explore the magic that happens when iron meets tannin-rich cloth.
Working with 3 different plants , Cutch, Oakgall, Willow or Sumac , participants will experiment with iron pastes & a variety of blocks and brushes to create layered compositions, repeated motifs, and expressive marks.
This workshop is limited to 6 people, allowing for lots of 1:1 attention!
Throughout the day, we will cover:
The properties of different tannins and how they influence colour depth
Formulating and comparing iron paste recipes
Techniques for successful block printing, how to build your own portable printing table, & paste pad
Different types of blocks to work with, and make yourself.
How to fix your textile piece to create a wash & light fast cloth.
Managing iron safely and minimizing fibre damage
How to incorporate this technique into other natural dye processes
This class is ideal for natural dyers, printmakers, and textile artists who want to deepen their technical understanding while expanding their surface design skills. You’ll leave with a portfolio of samples, printed studies, and the confidence to continue exploring iron–tannin printing in your own practice.
Come ready to experiment, play and build skill through process..
