Introduction to Indigo – Ferrous Vat

Dive into the deep blue magic of indigo with a hands-on introduction to creating and using a ferrous indigo vat.  In this workshop, you’ll learn how to prepare fabric for dyeing in indigo, as well as creating a vat from scratch ,and explore traditional and contemporary techniques for tying cloth and creating patterns. 

This workshop is limited to 8 people, allowing for lots of 1:1 .  No experience necessary. 

What we will cover -

Make an indigo ferrous vat together.

How to maintain & troubleshoot a ferrous indigo vat

Techniques for dipping, layering, and manipulating cloth to create variation in tone

Simple resist and pattern methods to experiment with surface design

How to finish indigo dyed cloth to ensure a long lasting colour in your textile.

Whats included-

variety of 11x11 fabric. to practice a variety of folding, clamping , binding techniques on .

1 larger piece for a final project- your choice of organic cotton bandana or linen fat quarter.

variety of scraps , paper to try dipping. 

light snacks;, tea/coffee will be available all day. 

Supplies to bring

• Comfy clothes you are not afraid to get a little messy or an apron
• I will have long rubber gloves available for use, but if you have sensitive skin, or allergies,  I suggest bringing a pair you know will work for you. 
• Bagged lunch, options for take out around the studio are limited
• notebook, pen  for taking notes.

Cancellations made 7 or more days before the workshop date will receive a full refund.

Cancellations made less than 7 days before the workshop are non-refundable. You're welcome to gift your spot to a friend, or I'll do my best to fill it — if I do, you'll receive a full refund.

If I need to cancel or reschedule a workshop (e.g. due to low enrollment or unforeseen circumstances), you'll receive a full refund or the option to transfer to another date.

About the studio . we will be gathering at Otherwise Studio in Guelph Ontario.

The studio is upstairs and although accessible once inside, there are about 4 steps up to the main outside door.  There is an elevator available once inside the building. 

Please email me if you have questions about the accessibility of the space. 

It can be a little tricky to find once inside the parking maze.  I will have signs posted  and you will receive my cell phone number for support if needed.
