Eco printing with backgrounds Saturday October 31 2026

Suitable for those with some eco- printing or natural dye experience ages 

Learn new techniques to add back grounds, and resists to your eco -printing knowledge.  This workshop is limited to 8 people, so there will be lots of 1:1 attention for this technique driven workshop. 

You will create & take home a variety of hemp fabric samples, dyed with 3 different techniques .  

We will cover

• relationship between iron & plant tannin in creating interesting leaf prints
• Different plant tannins as a pre treatment in eco-printing. 
• the use of " carrier blankets"  
• Best plants dye to use for creating background colours through the use of carrier blankets. 
• folding, layering  & barrier techniques 
• The process of preparing plant (cellulose) based fibers for best results, scouring, mordanting.
• Caring for your plant dyed fabrics

Included

• 2 pc hemp fabric approx- 8 inches x 27"
• 1 pc hemp fabric "fat quarter" (approx 18" x21" )
  
• 2 pc hemp fabric approx 11" x 11" 
  
• various fabric "blankets" for dye techniques 
• fabric & string for bundling 
• Various leaves & plants to work with
• Hand out with recipes & details of the techniques learned in the workshop
• Coffee, tea, water and light snacks will be available during our breaks.

Supplies to bring

• Comfy clothes you are not afraid to get a little messy or an apron
• I will have medical gloves available for use, but if you have sensitive skin, or allergies,  I suggest bringing a pair you know will work for you. 
• A note book and pen for note taking
• A mug for tea/ coffee

We will have about 60 -90 minutes for lunch time, while our bundles cook!

Bring a bagged lunch, options for take out around the studio are limited.

Cancellations made 7 or more days before the workshop date will receive a full refund.  Cancellations made less than 7 days before the workshop are non-refundable. You're welcome to gift your spot to a friend, or I'll do my best to fill it — if I do, you'll receive a full refund.

If I need to cancel or reschedule a workshop (e.g. due to low enrollment or unforeseen circumstances), you'll receive a full refund or the option to transfer to another date.

About the studio . we will be gathering at Otherwise Studio in Guelph Ontario.

The studio is upstairs and although accessible once inside, there are about 4 steps up to the main outside door.  There is an elevator available once inside the building.
